December News & Events — Sweet & Healthy Holidays

The holiday season is a special time that brings together joy, family, giving, tradition… and sugar at every turn.

While indulging in the occasional holiday treat is a no-brainer, too much sugar can have negative effects on your health and well-being.

If you’ve been eating too much sugar, you might be noticing:
Poor skin health
Constant fatigue
High blood pressure
Weight gain
Feeling constant hunger

But don’t worry! A few simple changes can make all the difference when it comes to how you choose your sweets.

There are different types of Sugars. This first, added sugar, is extremely processed and refined (think table sugar you’d find at a restaurant). These sugars do not have any nutritional value and negatively affect your blood sugar levels.

Next are the “natural” sugars such as coconut sugar, date sugar, honey, maple syrup, etc. These are a better alternative as they are made from more natural resources and not completely processed in a factory. Although, they’re still not the absolute best choice as they still break down in digestion the same as artificial sugars and they still affect your blood sugar and can negatively affect your heart health. It is a step in the right direction, but not your true sugar happy place.

Next, we have the best option for sugar: natural sugar substitutes like stevia or monk fruit. These are not considered “sugar” and do not break down like sugar when ingested. They will not have as many negative effects on your health and do not increase your blood sugar.

When it comes time to make all your yummy treats this season, consider using healthier alternatives to better your health while still enjoying all your favorite treats!

Health Coach Tip

What should you do when you’re at a holiday party and feel like you have no control over what and how much you will eat?Bring your own healthy dish (make sure it’s yummy, too!) so you have something nutritionally sufficient that you know you will eat.

Don’t show up starving! Have a mini-meal or snack before you arrive so you don’t feel the urge to overeat when you get there.

Eat a good breakfast with balanced protein, carbs, and fat to set yourself up for the day.
